Dr Zulfiqar Butt
Dr Zulfiqar Butt is a Palmerston North City Councilor. He holds the Council portfolios for Education and Students, the Inner City/CBD, and People and Community. Given that he earned a PhD in Natural Resource Management from Massey University studying emissions and removals of greenhouse gases at an institutional level, it makes sense that he is the lead spokesperson for the Council on climate change. He sits on numerous Council committees including the Community Development Committee, the Economic Development Committee, the Infrastructure Committee, the Manawatū District/Palmerston North City Joint Strategic Planning Committee, the Planning and Strategy Committee, the Play, Recreation and Sport Committee, among others. He is Deputy Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Committee. Outside of Council, he has significant roles in Local Government New Zealand, the Manawatū Multicultural Centre, the Wastewater Project Steering Group, and the Manawatū Muslim Association. He is the Ex Vice President of Federation of the Islamic Associations of New Zealand and have been involved with Palmerston North Interfaith Group.
